Seminar by Edvinas Gvozdiovas: “In Situ Magnetic-Field Stabilization for Quantum-Gas Experiments”
We continue the Sunrise Valley Quantum Research Seminar series. This time, the topic will be presented by Edvinas Gvozdiovas, a PhD student at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University, and a Guest Researcher at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Seminar title: In Situ Magnetic-Field Stabilization for Quantum-Gas Experiments
Date: 13 October, 13:00
Venue: Room D401, FTMC (Saulėtekio Ave. 3, Vilnius)
Language: English
Abstract:
“We demonstrate a minimally destructive in situ technique for measuring and stabilizing slowly drifting magnetic fields in ultracold-atom experiments. While conventional magnetic-field sensors are broadly used, their accuracy, precision, and dynamic range can be limited. Moreover, these sensors can disturb the scientific apparatus.
We overcome these issues by using the atomic system itself as a built-in magnetometer. To achieve this, we employ a pair of weak measurements to determine the Zeeman splitting of a magnetically sensitive atomic transition, thus revealing the magnetic field strength. This procedure is verified experimentally with ultracold Rb-87, weakly measured using partial-transfer absorption imaging. We then incorporated a Kalman filter to stabilize the magnetic field, eliminating long-term drift in the ambient field without significantly increasing shot-to-shot noise.”
