Meet the third FTMC team participating in the prestigious Life Sciences Baltics event. More specifically, this is the team leader. What he is doing raises eyebrows.
Dr. Arūnas Stirkė, a researcher of the Department of Functional Materials and Electronics, presented at the exhibition how he is developing Organ-on-a-Chip technology. This is a "living" three-dimensional cell structure with microfluidic elements - microscopic fluid channels.
What makes this technology special? It simulates the activity of real body organs! This would allow new treatments and the effects of drugs in development to be tested. Because it is more sophisticated and advanced than conventional tests of this kind, it could replace laboratory animal testing.
But this is not the biggest breakthrough yet. It is hoped that this technology will enable mankind to create artificial organs, which will help to solve the problems of treating many diseases - and eliminate the use of donor organs.
