A New Step Towards Joint Projects: the FTMC Visited the Prestigious German Institute DESY

On 20 January, the FTMC visited the German national research centre for fundamental science DESY, for the Baltic Technology and Innovation Days.

DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) is of the world's leading particle acceleration centres. Its synchrotrons (accelerators) used to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of matter, and conducts a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary scientific research in four main areas: particle and high energy physics; photon science; astroparticle physics; and the development, construction and operation of particle accelerators.

"The January event was dedicated to building stronger partnership between DESY and the Baltic States. The meeting focused on innovation and technology management issues, cooperation opportunities in the development of next-generation particle accelerators and chemical research in renewable energy areas such as the development of new batteries and catalysts and the production of green hydrogen," says Dr Karolis Stašys, Head of the FTMC Innovation and Technology Office and one of our Center's representatives at the event.

According to the expert, the FTMC and DESY have found many points of contact. For example, representatives of a German research institute have taken a particular interest in the activities of the FTMC Department of Nuclear Research and would like to establish closer cooperation - and our Center sees an opportunity to contribute to DESY's work on the new accelerator.

"We are also developing a new generation of catalysts for fuel cells and hydrogen and electricity production using methanol and carbon dioxide from recycling. We see that understanding how these processes work is very important in the development of these materials, and the structure DESY has would allow us to understand these processes better.

DESY is also very interested in the development of our laser technologies, especially our work to develop high-power laser devices that will enable the next generation of accelerators," highlights K. Stašys.

The meeting agreed on a trilateral cooperation between DESY, FTMC and the VU Life Sciences Center. Lithuanian representatives were invited to join in European projects.

This is not the first live meeting between DESY and FTMC. On 13 September, a delegation from this German institute visited our Center and learned about the activities of the scientists working there. DESY works with industry and business to promote new technologies that benefit society and foster innovation. The visit to the Baltic States was one of the steps towards achieving this goal.
