FTMC chemist Dr Martynas Talaikis elected to the Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences

The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences has elected new members to its Young Academy (LMAJA). We are delighted to announce that FTMC chemist Dr Martynas Talaikis has been elected as a new member in the field of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

The researcher from the Department of Organic Chemistry says that his decision to stand for election was driven by a desire to contribute more actively to the development of science in Lithuania.

“The LMAJA is a community of proactive, change-driven leaders whose values fully align with my own. I aim to promote interdisciplinary collaboration among physicists, chemists, and life scientists, and to strengthen the voice of early-career researchers both in academia and in the public sphere. I also believe that scientists have a responsibility not only to generate knowledge, but also to foster public trust in science,” says Talaikis.

“Drawing on my personal experience of collaboration with researchers from Taiwan, Ukraine, and other countries, I also intend to contribute to increasing the internationalisation of early-career scientists and to strengthening mentorship initiatives. Finally, I place great importance on open science and science communication, so that complex research becomes accessible to the public and helps to build trust in science,” adds the FTMC researcher.

Dr Talaikis holds a PhD in Biochemistry, which he defended at Vilnius University in 2020. He considers himself an interdisciplinary researcher, with work spanning surface chemistry, spectroscopy, and biochemistry:

“Put simply, I develop and apply advanced light-based methods that allow us to understand and control molecular processes occurring at phase boundaries. This is particularly important for biomedicine – for example, in the study of neurodegenerative diseases – as well as for the development of next-generation sensors and drug delivery systems.”

Martynas Talaikis is a co-author of 68 scientific publications. His scientific impact metric, h-index, is 15, according to the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database.

The LMAJA is a division of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, established in 2018 to bring together active, talented, and ambitious early-career Lithuanian researchers representing a wide range of scientific fields.
