FTMC Signs Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Iowa
On 12 March in Vilnius, the FTMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Iowa. The document was signed by FTMC Director Prof. Dr Ramūnas Skaudžius and the University of Iowa’s Vice President for Research, Prof. Dr Aliasger Salem.
Professor Salem visited Lithuania as part of a professional exchange programme run by the U.S. Department of State. One of the events during his visit was his public lecture, after which the memorandum was signed.
The document expresses the intention to promote collaboration between both institutions in education, training, and scientific research. Forms of such partnership include joint scientific activities, visits and exchanges of researchers and students, sharing of expertise, practical training, and participation in scientific conferences.
The agreement is valid for five years and may later be renewed.
“I welcome this new stage of cooperation – it is particularly gratifying that researchers and students from FTMC and the University of Iowa will be able to draw experience and inspiration from one another. Our values and our shared aspiration that science should serve society are fully aligned, which creates an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties between the scientific communities of the United States and Lithuania in every possible way. I am convinced that this will inspire new discoveries, foster the exchange of ideas, and ultimately bring significant benefit to science and society in both countries,” says FTMC Director Proffesor Skaudžius.
“My visit to Lithuania has been a meaningful opportunity to strengthen the scientific and educational ties between the United States and Lithuania. Universities and scientific institutes in Iowa and Lithuania share a strong commitment to research, innovation, entrepreneurship and training the next generation of scientists, and there is tremendous potential for deeper collaboration across our institutions,” emphasises Proffesor Salem.
The University of Iowa is one of the leading biomedical research centres in the United States, renowned for its cancer research, neuroscience, and space physics. These fields are considered exemplary cases of how discoveries in theoretical science can be successfully translated into clinical practice.
In addition, the University of Iowa’s medical centre is one of the highest-rated academic hospitals in the United States, consistently ranked among the top clinical and scientific institutions.
