In Memoriam. Olegas Eicher‑Lorka (1954–2026)
It is with deep sadness that we share the news that on 18 February, at the age of 71, Dr Olegas Eicher‑Lorka, a long‑serving member of the FTMC Department of Organic Chemistry and Head of the Laboratory of Organic Synthesis, passed away.
Nearly 50 years ago, Olegas began his scientific career at the former Institute of Chemistry. He was an outstanding specialist in his field, distinguished not only for his expertise in organic synthesis but also for his work in theoretical molecular modelling. He successfully supervised PhD students and led the former Laboratory of Organic Compound Synthesis.
Olegas was an exceptionally curious person, always diving into new ideas and technologies. He was among the first at the Institute of Chemistry to work with computer equipment and took care of the staff’s email systems; whenever anything broke down, everyone knew that Olegas was the first person to turn to.
Dr Eicher‑Lorka was a patriot of Lithuania and an active participant in the Sąjūdis movement. He always had thoughts and suggestions on what should be improved and how to move forward.
He was a principled scientist who always expressed his views openly. His unique and touching sense of humour will never be forgotten. We will always remember a sincere, open, cheerful, and curious colleague and friend. Above all, we will miss the scent of his smouldering cherry‑wood pipe and the remarkable flowers he grew…
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Olegas’s family, loved ones, colleagues, and all who shared his ideals.
Farewell respects may be paid on Friday from 17:30 at the funeral home “Nutrūkusi styga”. The urn will be carried out on Saturday at 14:00, and the burial will take place at Sudervė Cemetery.
