Skyrius atlieka fundamentinius ir taikomuosius tyrimus puslaidininkinių medžiagų technologijos ir fizikos srityse, optoelektronikos prietaisų technologijoje ir jų taikymuose. Skyriaus turima moderni puslaidininkių epitaksijos technologinė įranga leidžia užauginti darinius iš naujų medžiagų, tokių, kaip III grupės elementų bismidai, ir pagaminti infraraudonojo ir terahercinių dažnių diapazono optoelektroninius prietaisus. Skyriaus mokslininkai taip pat gali atlikti visą kompleksą standartinių medžiagų optinių savybių matavimų; jie yra sukūrę visą eilę unikalių terahercinės spektroskopijos ir vaizdinimo technologijų.

Optoelektronikos technologijų laboratorija  
  • Veeco GENxplor molekulių pluoštelių epitaksijos (MPE) sistema yra skirta aukštos kokybės  III-V junginių epitaksiniam auginimui ant padėklų iki 3 colių diametro esant labai aukštam auginimo parametrų valdymo tikslumui. Sistema aprūpinta In, Ga, Al, Bi molekuliniais šaltiniais, As2 ir Sb skaldikliais bei Si, Be bei Te legirantais.
  • SVT „III-V MBE System Model C-V-2“ - MPE įrenginys skirtas III-V grupės puslaidininkinių sluoksnių ir kvantinių darinių auginimui. Įrenginys aprūpintas In, Ga, Al, Bi molekuliniais šaltiniais, As2 skaldikliu bei Si ir Be legirantais.
  • Integrated Vacuum Deposition System Model TFDS- 870 - elektroninio spindulio įrenginys skirtas metalų kontaktų ant puslaidininkių struktūrų formavimui. Galima garinti Au, Ge, Ti, Ni, Al, AuGe vieno sluoksnio ar daugiasluoksnes dangas.
 
Puslaidininkių optikos laboratorija  
  • Moduliacinės spektroskopijos stendas (fotoatspindys, elektroatspindys, SPV, l‑moduliacija; hw = 0.5 – 4 eV sritis).
  • Žematemperatūrinės optinės spektroskopijos stendas (foto- ir elektroatspindys, l‑moduliacija, fotoliuminescencija, PLE; hw = 0.56 – 5 eV sritis, 4 – 300 K temperatūrinis intervalas).
  • Daugiakampės spektroskopinės elipsometijos stendas (RC2 Woolam ir sukamo analizatoriaus elipsometrai; hw = 0.4 – 6.2 eV sritis).
  • Poliarizacijos moduliacijos ir magnetooptinių tyrimų stendas (PEM-moduliacija, magnetinis laukas iki 3 T).
  • Fourier IR spektroskopijos stendas (Vertex 70v FT-spektrometras, hw = 0.01 – 0.7 eV, su Ramano ir cirkulinio dichroizmo blokais).

Vykdomi projektai
  • Europos kosmoso agentūros projektas „Bismidai infraraudoniems fotodetektoriams“ (BIRD)Projekto tikslas yra naujųjų A3B5 puslaidininkinių junginių, vadinamų praskiestaisiais bismidų lydiniais, sluoksnių auginimo technologijos sukūrimas. Bi įvedimas į GaAs, GaInAs ir InAs elementarųjį narvelį vietoj arseno atomų stipriai susiaurina junginio draustinių energijų tarpą ir daro juos patrauklius artimųjų ir viduriniųjų bangų taikymams. Vykdant projektą bus įvertintos išvystytų technologijų taikymo perspektyvos dviejose kryptyse: i) epitaksinių bismidų sluoksnių, pasižyminčių ~1 eV draustinių energijų tarpu, taikymas didelio efektyvumo tandeminių fotovoltinių elementų kūrimui ir ii) fotodiodų ir fotodiodinių matricų, jautrių infraraudonosios spektro srities bangoms iki 4 mm, gamybai.

  • FP7 Marie Curie ITN projektas NOTEDEV (Nauji teraherciniai prietaisai)
    NOTEDEV yra Europos Sąjungos Marie Curie programos projektas.  Šio projekto tikslas - įvaldyti vadinamąją Terahercų (THz) elektromagnetinio spektro dalį.  Jungtinis su vienais geriausių Europos universitetų ir industrinių partnerių bendradarbiavimo siekis yra moksliniai tyrimai šioje srityje ir jaunųjų fizikų paruošimas. Teraherciniai šaltiniai bei detektoriai turi daug reikšmingų pritaikymų biologijos, medicinos, saugos ir nedestruktyvaus testavimo srityse.  Kai kurie teraherciniai prietaisai jau dabar yra praktiškai naudojami, tačiau norint visiškai išnaudoti terahercinės elektromagnetinio spektro dalies potencialą, reikia tęsti prietaisų tobulinimą orientuojantis į jų efektyvumą, kompaktiškumą, patikimumą bei kainą. Fizinių ir technologijos mokslų centre (FTMC) vystomi yra puslaidininkiniai THz komponentai laikinės Spektroskopijos (Time-Domain Spectroscopy, TDS) sistemoms aktyvuojamoms 1,55 μm femtosekundinių lazerių impulsais.  Šie femtosekundiniai lazeriai užtikrintų THz-TDS sistemos konkurencingą kainą ir kompaktiškumą.
