Mission: Application of electrochemical technologies and investigation methods for the fabrication and characterization of new functional materials. 
R&D activities: 
  • Alloying of light metals (Mg, Al, Ti) with hardly fusible ones (Zr, Ta, Nb, Cr,) using physical techniques; investigation of the structure, corrosion behaviour and applicability of the alloys as hydrogen storage or biodegradable materials
  • Formation of transparent conductive semiconductor layers by means of combining chemical and electrochemical methods and investigation of their performance in various photo/electrocatalytic reactions
  • Synthesis of new nanomaterials and investigation of their possible applications in future optoelectronics, smart materials engineering, energy conversion and nanomedicine
  • Formation of conversion coatings for active corrosion protection
  • Investigation of nanoparticles’ and chemical environment effects on the tribological processes in the development of multifunctional technologies for elastomer recycling, coating wear suppression and improvement of lubricant materials.

Equipment
DC and RF magnetron sputtering device Univex 350 (Leybold systems). The device is used for deposition of thin films of metals, metal alloys, oxides and composites on various substrates.
 
   
ALD device Fiji F200 with plasma module and ozone generator (Ultratech/Cambrige NanoTech). The device is used to deposit extremely thin oxide films (few to 100 nm) on various substrates.
 
   
Electrochemical measurement systems (Potentiostats/Galvanostats/Frequence analyzers) PARSTAT 2273 (Princeton Applied Research) with electrochemical quartz crystal microgravimetry (EQCM), Autolab 302 (Metrohm Autolab) with rotating disc electrode, Solartron 1280C (Ametek, inc.), Reference 600+ (Gamry instruments). Photoelectrochemical measurement system Zennium CIMPS (Zahner Elektrik). These systems are used for investigation of photoelectrochemical behavior and material characterization in electrolytic solutions for metals, alloys and semiconductors.
 
   

Ball-on-plate tribometer
CSM tribometer by Anton Paar (Switzerland) can be used to evaluate friction and wear tendencies under these conditions: pin-on-disc, ball-on-disc and ball-on-plate configurations; loads from 0.1 to 6 kg·f;  rotational velocity 0.5 to 500 rpm; linear reciprocation 0.3 to 3 Hz; ball diameters 1.5, 3, 6 or 10 mm; pin diameters 3 or 6 mm; dry friction, film lubrication or bulk lubrication. Profilometry and microscopy peripherals are available.

 
   

Pin-on-Disc tribotester
Micro PoD tribotester by Ducom (India) can be used to evaluate friction and wear tendencies under these conditions: pin-on-disc and ball-on-disc configurations; loads from 5 to 100 kg·f;  rotational velocity 50 to 500 rpm; angular reciprocation 0.5 to 5 Hz; ball diameters 3, 6 or 10 mm; pin diameters 3 or 6 mm; dry friction or film lubrication.  Profilometry and microscopy peripherals are available

 
   

Granulometric sieve shaker
Vibrational shaker plate Vibramax 100 by Heidolph (Germany) is equipped with standardized calibrated sieves of 20 cm diameter.  Granulometry can be determined in US Tyler Mesh scale: 10 Mesh (2 mm), 20 Mesh (0.85 mm), 40 Mesh (0.425 mm), 60 Mesh (0.25 mm), 80 Mesh (0.18 mm) and 100 Mesh (0.15 mm).  Specialized procedures of granulometry determination for rubber crumbs and powders.

 
   

Ultrafreezer
Deep freezer Sanyo MDF-192 (Japan) for low temperature studies from -20°C to -85°C.  Chamber volume of 192 liters.

 
   

Corrosion cabinet
Forced draft and controlled humidity corrosion cabinet HCP-108 by Memmert (Germany). Linear corrosion (free of chlorides or other precursors) tests on steel and aluminum alloys can be performed from 30°C to 90°C by varying humidity from 20% to 95% RH.  Chamber volume 108 liters.

 
Projects
  • “Camelina & crambe Oil crops as Sources for Medium-chain Oils for Specialty oleochemicals“  (COSMOS)“ H2020-ISIB grant agreement 635405. Coordinated by Dr. Rolf Blaauw (Wageningen Univ., NL), from 1 April 2015 until 30 Sept 2019 the consortium of 18 members from 10 countries aims at reducing the dependence of Europe’s oleochemical industry on imported plant oils by turning camelina and crambe into profitable, sustainable, multipurpose, non-transgenic European oil crops. The total project budget exceeds 10 million €. FTMC team, headed by Dr. S.J. Asadauskas, focuses on chemical modification of camelina and crambe oils for producing lubricant basestocks for hydraulic fluids. Organic synthesis, degradation investigations, viscometric studies and tribological investigations are performed by L. Labanauskas, A. Grigucevičienė, D. Bražinskienė, A. Strakšys and other FTMC researchers.

  •  „New generation technology for tyre recycling using ozonation and devulcanization (OzoRubber)“ Eureka grant agreement E!9962. Coordinated by Ofer Vexler (Nizor Ltd, Israel) and Arturas Jukna (UAB Gumos Technologijos), from 1 Sept 2015 until 31 Aug 2016 the total project budget exceeded 200 thousand €. FTMC team, headed by Dr. S.J. Asadauskas, studied conversion of End-of-Life Tires into value added rubber powder by treating with ozonation and mechanochemical devulcanization.
