Skyriuje vykdomi pavojingų cheminių atliekų (pagrinde vandeninių tirpalų) nukenksminimo procesų tyrimai, naudojant modernius metodus ir įrenginius, siekiant utilizuoti ar regeneruoti iš jų vertingas chemines medžiagas. Šių tyrimų pagrindu sukurtos technologijos daugelį metų sėkmingai naudojamos FTMC pavojingų atliekų nukenksminimo baro ūkinėje - komercinėje veikloje, teikiant paslaugas šalies pramonės įmonėms.
Daugelį metų sėkmingai vykdomi vandens ir gamybinių nuotekų valymo procesų tyrimai, naudojant sorbentus: modifikuotas aktyvuotas anglis, nulinio valentingumo geležis, nano sorbentus, sintetinius bei natūralius (chitozaną) sorbentus ir geriamojo vandens paruošimo įmonių atliekas su geležies oksidų / hidroksidų nanodalelėmis.
Svarbi mokslinių eksperimentinių tyrimų kryptis - aplinkai draugiškų technologinių procesų kūrimas. Tai plastikų bechrominės metalizacijos technologijų kūrimas, taikant kitokius negu įprasta plastikų aktyvavimo ir ėsdinimo prieš cheminę metalizaciją būdus. Šių tyrimų rezultatai sėkmingai komercializuti Vokietijoje ir JAV.
Skyriuje veikia Cheminių dangų laboratorija, kuri teikia paslaugas ūkio subjektams, formuojant aliuminio anodinio sluoksnio dangas su specialiomis savybėmis.

įranga
Skyriuje naudojama aparatūra skirta jonams ir lakioms organinėms medžiagoms, esančioms vandeniniuose tirpaluose, analizuoti. Tai kapiliarinės elektroforezės aparatas „P/ACETM MDQ Capillary Electrophoresis System“ ir dujų chromatografas su masių detektoriumi Shimadzu GCMS – QP2010.
Taikomiesiems darbams vykdyti naudojami vakuuminio vandens garinimo sistema WT55 HPR ir ozono generatorius SF 85.
