Joint scientific project about fabric masks efficiency presented on video

Does your favourite fabric face mask provide the best protection against Covid-19 and other infections, spread by airborne transmission?

The answer is presented in this short video about the results of tripartite project "Joint United Kingdom, Lithuania and Ukraine project - evaluation of nanoparticles from Coronavirus safety perspective", which FTMC scientists ran together with the UK and the Ukraine colleagues.

The main aim of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of cloth masks in stopping the spread of coronavirus. During 3,5 months of the project scientists have studied 24 patterns of different textiles.

FTMC dr. Steigvilė Byčenkienė - the leader of this project, says that the most efficient are the surgical masks and the fabric masks efficiency depends on many factors:

"We estimated how many aerosol particles of different sizes passed through the material. Of course, the different materials had quite different retention properties: some were better in filtering aerosol particles, others were slightly worse. This depends on certain physical mechanisms and physical laws that determine how the aerosol particle is trapped within the material itself. Due to own different properties different fabrics are able to remove aerosol particles of different sizes in very different ways.

Our recommendations: when selecting a cloth mask, it is important to consider the presence of an internal pocket for inserting polypropylene, a material used in the sewing of medical masks. This would ensure the compliance of the masks with certain requirements and provide greater protection against the spread of the coronavirus, reducing the likelihood of infection."
